How to become a Free Soul? Stop living in the past, in attempting to erase the defeats of the past. Yes, I have given away the answer in the article’s headline in the very first line!
One of the episodes of this Amazon Prime’s popular series – Mentalist, actually got me to write this piece. And honestly, this article is as much what I am communicating with you as I am to myself, as I didn’t want the realization I had (which motivated me to write this) go down the memory hole.
The specific episode is about a double murder investigation in the middle of a high school reunion, where in the perpetrator is found based on Patrick Jane’s logic – “No matter how hard you try to cover up that you’ve changed in all these 15 years, the instincts never change”.
Yes, it was the 15th year reunion as the backdrop of the murder and the investigation that starts from there on. And one of the key observations of Patrick Jane was that everyone at the function was trying real hard to project their progress in life, but at the bottom, no one has changed a bit in real! And following those trails, leads him to nab the perpetrator in the climax scene.
Back to the Free Soul stuff.
Free Soul – All of us want freedom, but we ourselves make it impossible to achieve this dream status as we constantly try to create a false aura in the present moment, with a presumption that it is going to change those defeat moments of the past.
If I was not popular in high school days and that made me feel miserable, I continue to manipulate my way to draw everyone’s attention at the company, where I am currently employed as the Vice President, 20 years later!
Which means, even after these 20 years, I am still living today with an unabated hunger to win over the high school days!
I am just enumerating a typical example of how our past scars can drive us and keep us as slaves of the past, stopping us from living the present.
If we let this happen, not living the present and being a complete slave to the past, then how are we going to be Free souls?
The “present” is the only gift we have, filled with surprises and rewards, if only we have the vision to find them.
However, we are bent upon the repeat process of creating several defeat moments over the years, and this gets into a reverse spiral that takes us far from being free in our thoughts, actions, values, etc.,
The reason being, we are chasing an illusion that occurred to us in the past, that no longer exists in our present life, but is being given constant attention. These illusionary desires drives our actions, which are way out of touch with the present reality.
The more out of touch are our actions from reality, the more disappointed we are going to eventually feel. The more unfulfilled we turn out, the more we are going to try to go behind those illusions.
On the contrary, what really matters, if you ever read through the citations of highly successful people is “what they achieved at different milestones of their lives”. And if you pay close attention to those achievements, they are in some kinda progression with their life’s transition. Growing in magnitude as time lapses, at the cusp of every new opportunity and moment.
This proves a point, they’ve been just focusing on making their “present” count, with no bearing whatsoever to how the past had treated them.
This makes them a truly free soul, driven by karma, living by the moment, not burdened to create any false aura.
In the end, it’s always the Karma that becomes our identity and what we achieve as we “go along” in this life is what counts.
What we didn’t achieve and keep trying hard forever to achieve for the rest of our lives, won’t count.
That’s how we become a FREE SOUL
